We Need Rest and Reflection

We are just a few days away from the Labor Day holiday.

When I was a boy, Labor Day was not just a holiday.  It marked the end of summer and the beginning of school because we did not get into the swing of things until the next day; it was too hot before that, and we did not have air conditioning.

Most would agree that Labor Day is supposed to be a day of rest.  Though some of us may gain a little rest on Monday, we do not always focus on resting.  However, we need to do so.

Jesus knew that life is hectic and often painful.  That is why he said in Matthew 11:28: “‘Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’”  I know many people who are weary and burdened; they (we) need rest.

It is not a new concept.  If you go back to the beginning (Genesis 2), you will see how after creating creation God rested, and He declared the day holy.  And he later instructed the Jewish people to observe that same kind of rest weekly while focusing on Him.  After all, the Day of Rest was not created to honor workers but to honor God.  He grants us the ability and opportunity to work.

Too often we do not consider God in our concept of working.  Too often we consider Sunday as a day for Him while we take care of our own business the other days.  Too often we forget that our entire week (and entire life) is supposed to honor Him while also benefiting us.  Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people.”  It is hard to miss God’s concern over every moment of our lives when we read that verse.

And so, we come to Labor Day.  This is a wonderful opportunity to rest, but it is also a fantastic opportunity to examine how we are doing in life.  Use the day to think about where you stand in your work, life, family, and spirituality.  Consider what needs to be strengthened or changed so that you can honor God and live purposefully.  Use the day to look at your labor and determine whether it is headed in the right direction.

Enjoy your Labor Day and use it to propel you into the days ahead.
