We Need God’s Protection in Times of Need

Many years ago, a British express train raced into the night with its powerful headlight piercing the darkness ahead.  Queen Victoria was on that train.

Suddenly, the engineer was startled by what he saw.  In the middle of the tracks and in the light’s beam stood a figure in a black cloak waving his arms.  He immediately applied the brakes and brought the speeding train to a halt.

Several man climbed down from the train to find out what had happened, but they could not find anyone out there.  They decided to walk a little further and were shocked to find that the fog was concealing a horror.  A bridge had washed out from a swollen stream, but they could not find their rescuer.

As the bridge and tracks were being repaired, the trainmen conducted a more intensive search for the flagman who had saved them, but they could find no one.  However, one of the men happened to look at the train’s headlight and discovered a big dead moth.  On a hunch, he wet its wings, stuck it on the headlight, and turned on the light.  Suddenly, the “flagman” was standing ahead on the tracks.

Seconds before the train would have reached the washed-out bridge, the moth had hit the headlight giving the appearance of a flagman waving his arms.

When Queen Victoria heard about what was discovered, she said, “I am sure it was no accident.  It was God’s way of protecting us.”

Life is full of examples of strange things happening just in time to prevent catastrophe.  Sometimes those changes in our plans disappoint us until we find out what could have been if we had followed through.

Long ago, God told Jacob something that is true for His children today.  He said in Genesis 28:15, “‘Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go.  I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’”

Perhaps we should alter our prayers.  Perhaps we should ask God to protect us even when it may be inconvenient.  Perhaps we should ask God to send a moth when the bridge is washed out ahead.  Definitely, we should thank God for those moths.
