How Can I Be Thankful?

When I was a child, I used to trek into the woods to create a masterpiece that would be the envy of any architect.  I gathered old limbs.  I pulled down vines.  I gathered up old nails.  And I built a fort or castle or house or whatever I wanted it to be on any given day.  I was so proud of it, and I loved it.

In recent years, I love eating.  Specifically, I look forward to my family sitting together around the table.  I listen to what is happening in their lives and cherish every moment.  I think about our past and look forward to our future.  I love it.

So often, many people have the idea that life must be perfect and happiness is contingent upon what one has.  It is no wonder that so many people are not happy – or grateful.

The Bible tells us that we have to have the right view of life.  In fact, we are told in Hebrews 13:5, “Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you.”

No matter what happens, if Jesus is your Lord and Savior, He is enough.  And yet, beyond that, He gives us so much.

On this Thanksgiving, I ask you to think not about what you do not have.  Think about what you do have.  Think about the good that you have experienced.  Think about how gracious God is to bless us though we deserve nothing.  Remember the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Give thanks!  You are blessed.
