As I write this article, our area is about to face some possible icy/snowy weather. As you read this, you have already seen whether or not the predictions came true. I hope you have stayed warm and safe.
Cold weather in the South brings a lot of fears. We are not used to it. We do not know what to do with it. And if the roads get icy, we do not know how to drive on it.
Inevitably, during a cold snap we typically see two extremes on display. We see those who are cautious and those who throw caution to the wind. In which group do you fit?
Sometimes you need to travel when conditions are bad. When I drive on icy roads, I try to be careful and slow. However, some people think it is fun to slip and slide in a vehicle; the ditches have welcomed many of them.
I like to have fun, but I also want to be careful. I do not want to pay an expensive towing charge and a hefty repair bill. And I definitely want to be around for my family.
In life we see the same extremes in play. Some people are cautious, and some are not. I do not believe that you have to go to either extreme. I have discovered that you can have fun and still be careful about it.
In a larger sense, when dealing with your spiritual life and your eternal responsibilities, wisdom is the key. We must never place what we consider to be “fun” above what we know God desires (and often commands). We must be cautious/careful to live our lives in a way that brings true fulfillment and gives God the greatest glory. We must be wise.
Proverbs 16:17 states, “The highway of the upright avoids evil; the one who guards his way protects his life.” We must be careful.
Ephesians 5:15-16 states, “Pay careful attention, then to how you walk – not as unwise people but as wise – making the most of the time, because the days are evil.” We must be careful.
Becoming a child of God and growing in your faith are crucial. I urge you to avoid the slippery slopes of life and enjoy the blessings of the One who gives us life. Be careful.
