When Thinking Turns into Worry

How much time do you spend thinking?

We know that thinking is important.  After all, we grew up hearing that you should think before you speak.  That implies that we often speak before we think.

The truth is that we think more than we realize.  We constantly process everything around us (sounds, images, moving things, temperature – everything), but we often do not realize that our brain is thinking.  It seems to happen on its own.

Sometimes it seems that worry also pops up on its own.  We worry about so many things without realizing that worry is thinking that has become toxic.  Instead of processing what is happening or could happen, we immediately begin to “think” that we will experience the worst-case scenario.  And if we focus on what probably will not happen or what we cannot change, we are unable to actually move forward.

Few people realize that worry is dangerous because it causes us to deny who God is and what God can do.  Without realizing that we are doing it, we doubt that God knows our situation, cares about our situation, or can do anything about our situation.

Jesus made it clear about worry.  He pointed out the reality that many people experience – a consistent worry over food or drink or clothing.  He pointed out that the simplest of creatures do not do that, and then He said in Matthew 6:25, “Don’t worry about your life…”

The good news is that Jesus did not just tell us to stop worrying.  He gave us the remedy for worry.  He told us Matthew 6:33 that instead of worrying, we should “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”

Think about that.

If we begin to put God first in our lives (not just saying that He is but actually doing it), our life changes.  Suddenly we have purpose, direction, hope, peace, joy, and much more.  Instead of being consumed by what could be but probably will not be, we begin to focus on what God can do.

I hope you will take this to heart.  It is hard; I can attest that I struggle with it regularly.  However, when I trust, God always comes through.

Let Him come through for you.
