What can we do about all the turmoil going on around us?
Every time I look at the news (or just around me), I see crime, political nastiness and fighting, selfishness, war, division, hate, fear, and so much more. We all wish that things would get better, but they do not seem to be. What can we do?
What I find very sad is that those who have accepted the salvation offered by Jesus know the cure. Jesus is that cure. He offers peace, hope, love, direction, blessings, salvation, and so much more. Anyone who accepts Him as Lord and Savior can have those things, but it is obvious that most people have not experienced them.
Long ago, some of Jesus’ disciples tried to help a boy who was in terrible shape, but they could not do anything to help. When Jesus arrived on the scene, He fully healed the child. Naturally, the disciples wanted to know why they could not do anything, but Jesus could, so Jesus told them: “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. This kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:20-21)
Jesus’ answer would be the same today. We must pray – seriously pray – earnestly pray – humbly pray. Griping will never change the world. Jesus can. Fighting will never change the world. Jesus can. Pointing fingers will never change the world. Jesus can.
And Jesus can do it today.
The first Thursday of May (May 1 – this year) is the National Day of Prayer. Many people will meet at courthouses, churches, and other locations to pray for our communities, our country, and our world. It is an opportunity for all of us to join together to ask God to bless us, guide us, and heal us. I will be leading one of those gatherings at the Leake County Courthouse and noon.
I urge you to join a gathering. However, if you cannot find one, get together with some others and pray wherever you are. We need God’s intervention, so let’s seek it.
The right kind of changes can happen when we seek the One who can change hearts. Let’s pray.
The following book contains Scripture passages that can help you pray specifically for our nation. Click the picture to find out more…
