I grew up in Batesville, MS, and I discovered a bit of local trivia while in school. Though Batesville is where the main county government activities happen, Panola County has two county seats (Sardis and Batesville). Before the benefits of modern technology, the Tallahatchie River split the county and was not traversable at certain times of the year. There are officially two county seats still even though the original issue is no longer an issue.
That piece of trivia crosses my mind every time I think about Israel facing the Jordan River before they conquered their Promised Land. The river was at flood-stage and was not traversable. However, God told them to cross it and conquer the land.
The people did not know that God had a plan, but Joshua shared it with them. They were going to trust God to stop the river. In fact, in Joshua 3:13 he told everyone, “‘When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the Lord of the whole earth, come to rest in the Jordan’s water, its water will be cut off. The water flowing downstream will stand up in a mass.’” It did, and they conquered the land.
Can you imagine the confusion and fear that everyone must have had? No one wades across a flooded river.
There is an old saying that fits here: “The hardest step is the first one.” Their miracle was only going to happen when they chose to get their feet wet.
Sadly, I see many Christians who never seem to accept the fact that God wants to do great things through their lives. They convince themselves that it is ok to go through the motions and set their goals low. They do not want to get their feet wet and trust Him.
I hope that you have not forgotten who God is and what He wants to do in your life. Remember that Ephesians 3:20 says that He “is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us.”
What is it that God is leading you to do (or once led you to do that you did not do)?
Are you content to stay on the wrong side of the Jordan River, or are you ready to get your feet wet and trust God?
I challenge you to take some time to get alone with God and ask Him to show you what He wants you to do next. Trust Him. Obey Him. Get your feet wet!
