When I went to the beach as a child, I used to enjoy building things in the sand. My kids enjoyed doing it too. We may have called them sand castles, but they actually looked more like a crawfish chimney.
Sadly, no matter how strong my creation looked, when the tide came in, the castle melted away. It had no basis. It had no stability.
Sometimes we can be like that.
The greatest and richest sermon ever recorded is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. He ended it in Matthew 7:24-27 like this: “‘Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded the house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who build his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.’”
Too often our lives resemble the house on the sand – ready to collapse. Jesus told us, though, that if we hear what He says and do it, we will stand.
We all know people who can talk a good game but whose lives do not match up. Those people make me a little nervous. If they try to pretend to be one thing bur really are not, what can I expect of them?
We do not have to be like that if we will hear and do.
And if we will hear and do, some great things will happen. God will change you. He’ll mold you into more of what Jesus wants you to be, so you will become more like Him. It will show in how you look and what you say. It will change your character.
You can stand. Even when the storms of life hit, you will not collapse because you no longer rely on yourself. If you give God your mind, you can think His thoughts. If you give God your emotions, you can be calm in trials. If you give God your will, His will becomes your will. If you give Him your all, the Holy Spirit strengthens you.
Hear and do.
Hear and do.
Hear and do.
It starts with the little things and will change you in all ways.
