Do you remember the phrase, “He’s too big for his britches”?
I do not hear that phrase used very often anymore, but it is a good description of what we see far too often. Too many people think they are more important than anyone else.
If you watched the latest Heisman ceremony and its aftermath, you saw some sore losers (or sore fans of losers). If you watched the aftermath of our last several presidential elections, you also saw some sore losers who came up with 101 excuses why their candidate should have won. If you work, you probably have seen some people who get a bit more responsibility and suddenly think that everyone else should bow to them. You even see it in churches sometimes; someone is given a position, and they suddenly think that they should be the one to make all of the decisions (not remembering that Jesus is the actual head of the church).
Why do we do that? I realize that it is a “normal” thing, but for those who follow Jesus, it should be abnormal.
Jesus is God. He is the King of kings. He holds all power. BUT – He was willing to come to this world for us as a common man. His social position was a humble one. He spent His life sharing the truth and helping others. He looked nothing like so many “leaders” today.
Jesus also told us that we must be as He was. He said in Matthew 20:25-28, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Many may say that Jesus’ Kingdom is upside-down. However, it is only upside-down if you think that our messed-up world’s system is the right way. Shouldn’t we rather see Jesus as the one who was setting things right-side-up?
Christmas reminds us of God’s great gift to the world. I pray that it will also help us understand how we now should live our lives.
