How Do We Know the Direction to Go?

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to address the graduating class of Canton Academy at their baccalaureate service.  As I prepared and spoke, I prayed for them and about them.  What will they do next?  Where will they go?  What will their future look like?  Will they blaze their own trail or follow the pattern of others?

I asked those questions because I have noticed that far too many people do not know what they will do next, where they are going, how to move into the future, or how to not follow the crowd.  I do not want that form of aimlessness for them – or for anyone.  I want us to know where we should be going and what we should be doing.

In what direction are you heading?

The Apostle Paul had a strong statement for those who choose to follow Jesus.  In Romans 12:2 he wrote, “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”  That statement is largely ignored by most people (including far too many in our churches).

Do you try to fit into the mold of society?  Do you try to fit into what you think others expect of you?  Do you look at what others are doing before you choose what you will do?

Or…

Do you allow God to show you what to do?  Do you allow God to transform your thinking?  Do you strive to live your life in a way that is good, pleasing, and fulfills God’s perfect will?

Sadly, most people who follow the pattern around them waste their lives and have nothing of eternal value to show for their existence.  However, those who live for God may not see results immediately, but they are assured that God has noticed and will bless them immeasurably.  Which direction do you choose to pursue?

Making your life count will not happen by accident.  You (and I) must choose where we will find our direction.  I urge you to choose the path (the only path) that will bring you fulfillment here and forever.  Choose to follow Jesus.  He has never let us down, and He is not going to start with you.
