Are You Listening or Distracted?

As my kids were growing up, I began coaching them in soccer, baseball, and golf.  There were various reasons why I wanted to be their coach, but I truly enjoyed myself and loved the time with them on the field or course.

When my daughter played soccer, we usually had a good team.  We would win nearly all of our regular season games because we focused on working together.  However, we did not always have success at the district and state levels.

One season I decided to try to call specific plays while they were on the field rather than waiting until we had a timeout or game break.  I had certain signs (and sometimes words) that would signal that a play was to be run.  But it never worked.

Typically, a player or two would pay attention to know what was called, but most players got so enraptured by the game that they could not or did not see nor hear me.  Oh, what could have been…

Calling a play during a game requires the coach and players to be in tune with each other.  If they are not in tune, a coach is just getting hoarse or simply doing arm exercises.  You have to pay attention to know what to do.

That principle is true in your Christian faith too.  Listen to Psalm 32:7-8: “You are my hiding place; You protect me from trouble.  You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.  Selah.  I will instruct you to show you the way to go; with My eye on you, I will give counsel.”

Verse 7 says that you need to be in tune with God.  You have to recognize His presence and His voice.  Verse 8 says that God will show us what to do.  Stay in tune and follow His command.  It is as simple as that.

But how often are we not truly in tune?

When you are in the middle of a game or in the midst of life, it is easy to get overwhelmed by what is happening and not listen to your “coach.”  We may want to listen, but we often don’t.

I assure you: God has something for you.  Are you listening?  Are you in tune?  Will you?
