How to Truly Have a Happy New Year

When I was a child, I loved to get up on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons; after all, that was the only time you could watch them back then.  I also enjoyed a program that aired on Sunday mornings called Gospel Singing Jubilee.  It always had fun, uplifting music, and the theme song stuck with me throughout the week.

The word “jubilee” seemed odd to me.  We didn’t use it in normal conversation.  However, once I understood its meaning, I wanted to experience it.  I think you would too.

In Leviticus 25 God told Moses that the Israelites were to observe a special year every 50 years that would be their “Jubilee.”  Jesus referenced this special year (in Luke 4:18-19) when He read from Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  That “year” is a reference to the Jubilee.

Oh, how we need this year to be a “Jubilee.”  And it can be.

You see, all of those things that God had to tell people to experience became available every year because of Jesus.  He even said (in Luke 4:21), “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”  Jesus was anointed.  Jesus preached good news to the poor.  Jesus proclaimed release for the captive.  Jesus healed.  Jesus set the oppressed free.  Jesus is that Jubilee.

In 2026 (and every other year), we can experience that.  But you have to choose to do so.

Will you accept God’s forgiveness?

Will you seek forgiveness from God and others?

Will you offer forgiveness to those who hurt you?

God has already offered forgiveness to you, and you have done far more to Him than any person has ever done to you.  Be grateful and share it.  Your Jubilee can begin now!

Give your year a boost by adding daily devotions into it. Timothy Keller’s year-long devotional (below) could be what you need…
