Mississippi has the opportunity to vote for life or death

Amendments 26

I’m sure that you have heard about it, but what have you heard?

For those who have not actually seen what the wording is (that Mississippians have the opportunity to vote for or against), it is this:

“Should the term ‘person’ be defined to include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the equivalent thereof?  __ Yes __ No”

That’s it – in its entirety. Continue reading

What would you do?

The following article was published in First Baptist’s Reminder newsletter September 28, 2011…

Chuck Swindoll tells the story of a house church in the former Soviet Union.  They had to meet in secret to avoid reprisals from the communist government.  One Sunday these believers arrived inconspicuously in small groups throughout the day so as not to arouse the suspicion of the KGB informers.  By dusk they were all safely inside, windows closed, and doors locked.  They began by singing a hymn quietly but with deep emotion.  Suddenly, the door was pushed open and in walked two soldiers with loaded automatic weapons at the ready.  One shouted, “All right – everybody line up against the wall.  If you wish to renounce your commitment to Jesus Christ, leave now!” Continue reading

VBS – Can you see it in it?

VBS

A funny thing happened recently at First Baptist Church.  We had Vacation Bible School.  For some, it brings memories of fun activities, songs, and (of course) red koolaid and cookies.  For some, it brings moments of fear and trepidation – as they think about being in a room with a few dozen sugar-ladened kids.  For some, it brings warm, fuzzy thoughts because they’ve never really been involved, but they like seeing the pictures of it on the screens.

Whatever your thoughts, I began to think of it in a new way this year.   Continue reading

There’s a Truck on My Tummy!

Tom with a truck on his tummyOK, not exactly on my tummy, but on someone else’s – but it got you to read this far…

So, I’m flipping channels a few days ago, and I turned to the History Channel (Do you remember when they actually presented history?).  A show was on (Stan Lee’s Superhumans) where they tell the story of people who can do “superhuman” things.  The reason it caught my interest was because I recognized the person – Dr. Tom Owen.  At over the age of 60, he displayed his amazing tummy strength by allowing a truck to drive over his stomach.

Pretty cool!  But I remember him when… 😉 Continue reading

Pray for the Search

Well, the process of choosing a Minister of Music Search Committee is over, but their work is just beginning.

To my FBC family, please pray diligently and daily for Kenny Clark, Scott Sullivan, Jay Willis, Susan Ezell, Michaelle Harrison, & Donna Tuskan – our Search Committee.

Over the weeks to come, I’m sure that there will be plenty of “suggestions” given to them, and they need to hear from the membership.  But please pray that, above all, they will seek God’s guidance.  This is a vital ministry, and their work cannot be taken lightly or pushed too quickly.  We must (in all things) seek God’s will as we seek to reach those without a saving relationship with Christ and as we seek to build disciples.

Greater things are still to come,

Jay

Driving in the Fog

Something happened today that I found very illustrative.  The fog rolled in.

OK, I realize that fog isn’t mysterious, and it isn’t strange – but it caused me to think (or, should I say, reflect).

I was coming home for lunch when I saw fog ahead – it was rolling in from the Gulf (and we live a block from the Gulf of Mexico).  Suddenly, I found myself engulfed by the Gulf-fog (pun intended).  I turned on my lights, slowed my pace, and continued home. Continue reading

Are you as excited as I am?

I am SOOOO excited about Sunday – and life, in general, at First Baptist Church of Pascagoula.  For all my FBC brothers & sisters, let me share why…

1. Sunday morning we continue our study of some vital keys for Spiritual Growth.  I have been amazed by the comments/results from the first two weeks of the series.  God is at work!  If He can use my puny efforts, I can only imagine what He is going to do through such an amazing church.  Please pray for God’s movement during our 11:00 a.m. worship celebration – pray, asking God to speak through me – pray, asking God to cement truth, build commitment, or convict where needed – pray, asking God to touch hearts as only He can.  And invite a friend.
